Fellowship in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine

This one or two-year ACGME-accredited Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine Fellowship is centered at Bonfils Blood Center (BBC) in Denver. In addition to the blood center, the program also includes training at HealthONE Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center (P/SL), Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital (SJH), Denver Health Medical Center (DHMC) and Denver VA Hospital (VA). The fellowship is designed to train applicants in all aspects of blood banking/transfusion medicine and to prepare physicians for a career in a regional blood center or a hospital-based transfusion service. Electives are available in a number of areas including coagulation, transplantation and biostatistics. A second year may be available for pursuing additional training in specialized areas of interest and in basic science or clinical research.
The fellowship in Transfusion Medicine at Bonfils Blood Center will provide outstanding training in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine (BB/TM) supporting development of individuals dedicating their careers to work in the area and committed to expanding the theory and practice of this discipline. In establishing this program we will support excellence in the practice of BB/TM and the growth and development of this field.
This mission will be supported by the achievement of the following goals:

Establish a comprehensive and detailed education program in BB/TM which will recruit bright physicians and scientists into the field complete their training qualifying them to complete boards in BB/TM, take positions and establish career activities in the field and contribute to the further development of the field.

Organize and develop a core group of individuals at Bonfils Blood Center and affiliated institutions who will function as teachers and mentors in this program. Faculty involvement in the program will aid in their development as educators.

Through the activity of the trainees and faculty in conjunction with the operations of Bonfils Blood Center and collaborating institutions, the program will support the establishment of excellence in BB/TM in the region. In achieving these goals, the program will ultimately enhance the care of patients.
Requirements: Candidates must be board certified/eligible in clinical pathology, internal medicine, pediatrics, anesthesia or surgery.
