Use of Donor Information and Blood Samples in Research

Zika Testing Information

Studies suggest that young donors may be at greater risk for iron deficiency than older donors. For this reason, we perform ferritin testing on donors ages 16 through 18. Ferritin testing provides a more reliable measure of the body’s iron stores than routine hemoglobin testing. If the results show a low ferritin level, we will notify them and their parents or guardians (per applicable state law) and include information about how to boost iron stores.
