DENVER (October 24, 2006) - Denver Broncos fans rolled up their sleeves and shattered the competition today at Colorado's largest single-day blood drive. A record-breaking 2,896 people, including 597 first-time donors, attended the ninth installment of Drive For Life and donated 1,872 units of blood to support patients in need. Bonfils and the Denver Broncos began a new rivalry this year by competing pint for pint with the Houston Texans. The Texans, in partnership with the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, who also held their community blood drive today, hosted just 661 blood donors.
Bonfils' Colorado Marrow Donor Program was also successful in registering 230 potential marrow donors to the National Marrow Donor Registry.
“Bonfils is so proud to have closed out this year's Drive for Life with record-breaking numbers and more lives saved than any other year,” said Jessica Maitland, vice president of marketing and community operations. “Tremendous results like this would not have been possible without the support of so many community-minded donors and the ongoing dedication of the Denver Broncos.”
Drive for Life IX is presented by Bonfils Blood Center and the Denver Broncos and generously sponsored by CBS4, Sportsradio 950 The FAN and The Denver Post.
Bonfils Blood Center supplies blood to more than 200 hospitals and healthcare facilities and needs to collect 4,350 donations each week to meet the needs of the community and to be prepared for any unexpected events.
