New Chief Medical and Scientific Officer Named to Bonfils Blood Center Executive Team

 

DENVER(August 14, 2007) – After an extensive yearlong nationwide search, Bonfils Blood Center is pleased to announce that Kevin J. Land, MD has accepted the role as chief medical and scientific officer which he will begin in early September. In addition to serving as the blood center's regulatory head, Dr. Land will also provide scientific and medical direction that supports high-quality blood products and components, laboratory testing, donor collections and counseling, hospital relations, product management and clinical research among other duties.

Prior to joining Bonfils, Dr. Land most recently served as medical director of Blood Systems Laboratory in Bedford, Texas; medical director of laboratory services for Carter Blood Care in Dallas; and served on the faculty in the department of pathology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center also in Dallas.


Dr. Land is an active member of several committees that provide advice and governance to the blood banking industry including serving as the vice chair of America's Blood Centers' scientific, medical and technology committee; a member of AABB's donor hemovigilance working group, cellular therapies standards committee and Circular of Information taskforce; and chair of Texas Medical Association's blood and tissue usage committee.


He earned his bachelor's degree in biochemistry from the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas in 1990 and later went on to receive his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas in 1995. Dr. Land's post-doctoral training continued with a residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas serving as chief resident in his final year, followed by fellowships in medical informatics and transfusion at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and Parkland Memorial Hospital/Carter Blood Care respectively.


For more than 60 years, Bonfils Blood Center has supported the community blood supply and has played an instrumental role in the lives of patients in need throughout Colorado and beyond. Bonfils Blood Center supplies blood to more than 200 healthcare facilities and needs to collect 4,350 blood donations weekly to meet the needs of the community and to be prepared for any unexpected events.
