ArvadaMan to Become Bonfils’ 10th 50-Gallon Donor

DENVER (Aug. 30, 2007) – Jack Joyce gave his first pint of blood in 1964 when a friend’s newborn needed multiple transfusions, but it wasn’t until more than a dozen years later that he became a regular donor thanks to frequent blood drives at his workplace. Now, Joyce is set to give his 400th pint of blood on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 8 a.m. at Bonfils Blood Center’s Denver West Community Donor Center located at 13952 Denver West Parkway, Building 53, Suite 335 in Golden, Colo.

After giving whole blood regularly for more than a decade, Joyce was asked to consider donating platelets which can be donated more frequently and have a shelf life of only five days. Joyce’s niece, who lost her battle with leukemia several years ago, required nearly 85 platelet transfusions during the course of her treatments. Knowing this, Joyce wanted to help others like his niece and has given platelet donations up to 24 times per year since the late 80s.

Joyce has no plans to stop giving blood after reaching the 50-gallon milestone. He says, “Giving blood is my way of giving back to the community. It’s so easy.”

Joyce, who will join only nine other 50-gallon-plus donors, will be awarded a special Bonfils diamond lapel pin, presented by Jessica Maitland, vice president of marketing and community operations for Bonfils Blood Center in front of the phlebotomists who take care of him every two weeks. A short reception will follow the presentation.

By taking a little time, you can make a big difference in your community when you give blood. One

blood donation can help save and enhance the lives of up to three patients. Contact Bonfils’ Appointment

Center to schedule your own life-saving donation appointment by calling 303.363.2300 or online at

www.bonfils.org.
